Dear President Bush:

We are a group of citizens in Sonoma, California, who represent the majority of Americans in urging you to bring an end NOW to your fruitless, divisive, and utterly misguided war and occupation of Iraq. As you can see from the attached photo, taken on Friday, August 3, we have publicly opposed that war every Friday in the Plaza of Sonoma, for 306 weeks, starting even before you launched that illegal and ill-advised invasion, and we will continue our vigil until you take concrete, real steps to bring our soldiers home.

Good plans and policies have been repeatedly been given to you on ways to disengage militarily and to bring some measure of stability to the region. You have simply ignored those wise councils. Astoundingly, you have shown nothing but obstinate disregard for the positive results that could have been achieved, long before now, by diplomacy and by political assistance from all the countries in the region, along with the United Nations.

You have become the most harmful warmonger that our country has had to endure. The legacy of your presidency will be the tragic consequences of your criminal misadventure, the human suffering that Americans and Iraqis will have to endure for many years.

As Americans, we are ashamed of you and of what you continue to do. We urge you to finally find the courage and commonsense, the humility and compassion, to reverse the wrong course you have taken, to begin to bring our armed forces home, and to allow others to help to heal the wounds you have caused to the suffering people of Iraq.
